Why spending Christmas in Les Gets is a good idea
Is there anything better than the Christmas period spent drifting down wide-open pistes, relaxing in front of the fire of your cosy chalet apartment and making the most of incomparable Christmas events in a charming French mountain village? Didn’t think so. However, Christmas and New Year in some resorts can be far from decompressing, with the holiday period bringing with it hectic slopes, noisy parties and congested streets. Yet there are still some ski resorts where you can still feel the lovely ‘silent nights’ as well as the joyous celebrations of a wonderful Christmas, one of these being the wonderful resort of Les Gets, itself part of the extensive Portes du Soleil ski area. Les Gets is also a vibrant resort with loads of attractive new-build real estate projects, catering for an international clientele (Swiss and UK clients love it!).
For the ultimate family Christmas away from the masses this year, Les Gets could be the perfect destination for your next chalet apartment. This gorgeous resort set within the enormous Portes du Soleil ski area provides the perfect balance of traditional appeal, family-friendly entertainment and unbelievable skiing that makes it one of our favourite resorts in which to celebrate Christmas and New Year. Summer is also fabulous for trekking and mountain biking but that is another story…
Plenty of festive activities and the enchanted forest in Les Gets
So what makes Les Gets so unique at Christmas? Well firstly, Santa Claus is well and truly coming to Les Gets ski resort this winter. Living most of the year in the enchanted forests around the village, preparing gifts for children, even Santa Claus can’t resist the magic of Christmas in Les Gets, coming out to celebrate in sparkling fashion.
Meet at Santa Claus’s station in the village centre and take the shuttle bus to his grotto in the Enchanted Forest. Families can take a ride with the elves to visit Santa Claus in the heart of his enchanting forest kingdom, including dedicated story-telling workshops to ensure our children truly feel the magic of Christmas. They will even be able to channel their inner elves and create Christmas-themed objects they can take home to show their family.
On Christmas Eve, you can see Christmas Santa on his way to deliver presents around Les Gets, as he takes part in an unbelievable torchlit ski descent under a sky of fireworks. Truly an enchanting scene in Christmas.
A Christmas market and attractions in Les Gets…and the hot chocolate!
Alongside Santa’s visit, a number of projects for the whole family will be happening throughout Christmas week. A Christmas market will be present, with local goods and unique gifts to take home to your loved ones. Ice sculptures will be exhibited around the resort and diverse shows will be taking place, as well as a number of Christmas fairs.
Or if you favour more activities after a day on the slopes, go to the picturesque outdoor ice-skating rink, explore the village on the Petit Train (small train), or just take a mountain walk through this superb winter scenery.
Plus, did we mention Les Gets offers some of the best hot chocolate we’ve ever tried? Try the one at Altitude Lodge just opposite Les Chavannes ski lifts. Definitely something to put on your Christmas to-do list.
When it comes to the New Year, they say start as you mean to go on, so why not start 2019 in the best possible way? A marvellous day of skiing, a relaxing evening experiencing a delicious fondue or tartiflette and a tremendous fireworks display over the mountains – Alpine bliss. Spending the New Year in the mountains is truly thrilling and an event you will always cherish.
Les Gets ski resort gives access to famous Portes du Soleil area
All these Christmas activities against a backdrop of some of the greatest skiing in Europe, with Les Gets giving you access to the enormous Portes du Soleil ski area. 650km of piste spanning 12 resorts, skiers of all levels are sure to find something to their liking. Expert skiers will love the sheer range of options both on and off-piste, whilst freestyle enthusiasts can find plenty to do in the ski area’s 11 snowparks.
For those that may not quite feel the need for 650km of pistes, the immediate Les Gets/Morzine ski area itself is ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers, with a number of diverse slopes ideal for building confidence on the skis. It’s one of the most peaceful areas on the Portes du Soleil area, meaning you can still benefit from the incredible skiing but won’t have to worry about packed slopes or long lift queues. From the picturesque tree-lined slopes to the cosy mountain chalets, Les Gets is the perfect place to enjoy Christmas for both adults and children alike.
Les Gets resort and Geneva to Les Gets transfer
In fact, Les Gets is one of our top picks for families all season long and the family-friendly factor is certainly one of the main criteria when buying a ski property. The other major criteria is the dual-season aspect and Les Gets/Morzine are favourites for summer activities in the Alps.
Les Gets is a postcard-perfect village at the best of times, and with sparkling fairy lights and Christmas colours throughout it is an enchanting Christmas paradise that will surely delight children’s imaginations. The village square is the perfect place to drink a mulled wine and watch the world go by, with a recently-restored merry-go-round (dating back to the 1800s!) for children to enjoy. Most of the shops, bars and restaurants in Les Gets remain family-run, with none of the corporate franchising that has entered other ski resorts. Whilst it retains a lively feel, it is not too hectic and holds a charming ambience that families enjoy so much. Also, it is just an hour’s drive from Geneva international airport, meaning no never-ending transfers and “are we there yet?” recriminations from the children.
