Why choose one or the other?

The caricature, often repeated, tells us that Val d’Isère exists for the après-ski and Tignes for the real sportsman, or sports, snow; Val d’Isère is traditional architecture and Tignes is Las Vegas among the snow. Like any valid caricature, there is some truth. It is true that après ski is exceptional in Val d’Isère and that Tignes boasts not without reason to be ‘the most sporting resort. It is in Val d’Isère that we play Polo and Tignes climbing the icefall and can even scuba dive under the ice of the lake.

A little history

Originally these two Iseran high mountain villages were more or less identical, with historical roots lost from the mists of time; two mountain villages that started opening small hotels and welcoming skiers before the Second World War. In Val d’Isère there was even what the Michelin Guide of the time called ‘montes pentes’.C’est the steamroller of the state who decided the modern destiny and separated from Tignes with the flood of village under water, held by the Chervil Dam in 1952, accompanied by the forced evacuation of recalcitrant inhabitants by CRS and blasting houses. Thus Val d’Isère remained at the bottom of its valley and the Tignards were forced to dig their future 6 km further and higher in Val Claret 1860m. It was time for the hegemony of Corbusier’s architectural ideas that the promoters embraced enthusiastically. Since the neo traditionalists have taken over and recent developments admit the taste of holidaymakers for old woods and cottages. At the same time the Daille built in 2009 in Val d’Isère is nothing historic.

The glacier

So much for the form; for the bottom we can not ignore that the main asset of Tignes is that it is located in a beautiful sunny circus dominated by the Grande Motte glacier, today the only ski area in France open in summer. Once open 365 days, the glacier is now closed at the end of the season and for a few weeks in autumn. This is partly because we must not over-use the glacier already threatened by the melting associated with climate change but also to give time to the managers of high-altitude ski lifts to do the necessary maintenance. To reach La Grande Motte coming from Val d’Isère you have to cross the whole resort of Tignes. So if you want to ski the glacier at all costs you should look for accommodation in Tignes.

Skier or not, if you want to see the glacier in all its splendor, take the funicular that goes from Tignes Val Claret to La Grande Motte. It travels a distance of 2100 to 3032 meters in a record time of 6 to 8 minutes. In the spring, when the Marmots emerge from their hibernation, one can see them from the whistling cabin standing on their burrows.

For the experienced skier

Side Val d’Isère, the conformation of the valley gives the opportunity to try a wider variety of trails for the experienced skier. Above all, you have to ski the Bellevarde, where you will find the OK Track used every year for the Men’s and the Face downhill, former track of the 1992 Olympic Games and the 2009 World Championship. It can easily be reached by the underground funicular of La Daille or the city center express gondola.

In Tignes the black slopes Naturides are particular. The snow groomers spend 60% of the field daily on the green, blue and red runs. By cons the black tracks ‘Naturides’ are not systematically maintained to preserve their wild appearance. They offer a powder field after snowfall and a bumpy field over the days. Thus, in clever slider, you enjoy these tracks little practiced, but tagged, secure and patrolled like any other. Naturidesse tracks are found on Tovière: tracks Daisies, Converts Bellflowers, Grizzly, Aster; on the Puck: the Guerlain, Chicherit and Golf slopes and on the Aiguille Percée: the Aiguille Breakée, Carnation, and Epilobes tracks. By cons for off-piste Val d’Isere is better in Tignes.

For intermediates and beginners

As there are few trees, because of the altitude, the tracks of the two stations are quite wide. Nevertheless in Tignes, with the exception of the Sache which goes down to Brévières under the dam (1198 m of elevation gain) and Paquerettes on Tovière, the tracks are not difficult. They are longer, wider, giving the impression that there are fewer people. The blue Prariond piste allows you to ski from the top of the Fresse pass to the foot of the mountain.

The sloping valley of Val d’Isère makes some rather hard tracks especially towards the bottom and for the middlemen in lack of confidence it is better to go back down from Bellevarde or Solaise by the gondolas. The easiest descent takes you to La Daille. By cons down, Tignes is flatter so easier with the disadvantage that the snow tends to turn into soup in the sun. In Val d ‘Isère, 19% of the slopes are rated green but there is only one in Tignes. On the other hand in Tignes there are more blue runs – 55% in Tignes against 35% in Val d’Isère. A criticism of Val d’Isère is that the classification of the tracks is not realistic enough and that many of the marked green tracks would be blue or even red elsewhere. If you are an expert the problem does not exist.

Tignes being located in a circus with the lake in the middle, you can ski in the direction of clockwise. From Val Claret you can leave by Palet and return by Tovière. From Tignes, you leave by Palafour and return by Tovière. By turning in this direction, you are always in the sun.
